The world is abuzz with the discovery that CBD can support systems all over our bodies. But we normally think of oral forms of CBD that work from the inside out. What about topical products? Is CBD beneficial for our skin too? You can find out in this post.

Is CBD Good for Your Skin?

Yes! When used topically in skincare, CBD can support healthy skin rejuvenation and sebum production, revitalising and rebalancing both oily and dry skin alike. CBD is also an antioxidant, protecting your skin from the damage of free radicals.

Understanding our Skin

Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and it is very complex.

Epidermis

The Epidermis is the outermost layer. The one we can see. It has the pores, moles, freckles, and scars, and is intended to be the protective shell of our bodies, keeping bacteria, germs, and foreign objects outside where they belong. It is also constantly regrowing skin cells.

Dermis

The Dermis supports the Epidermis, allowing us to receive sensory inputs and maintain body temperature. It also holds our veins, nerve endings, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands. It is where the collagen and elastin come into play.

That’s a lot of functions that need to be maintained and kept in balance!

The Endocannabinoid System

You may or may not know that human bodies contain an endocannabinoid system.

This system is made up of endocannabinoids, CB receptors, and enzymes.

Endocannabinoids: Endocannabinoids are molecules like the cannabinoids found in hemp and marijuana plants that our bodies produce themselves. They act as signals. Our bodies produce them to tell other parts of our system specific things about what we need.

Receptors: The CBD receptors pick up and process these chemical signals so the information can be used to help our bodies maintain homeostasis, or the normal functioning of the body.

Enzymes: Enzymes break down the endocannabinoids so the receptors can receive new input.

When we use cannabinoids from nature, our bodies react to them like they are the endocannabinoids we naturally create ourselves. They don’t do anything artificial to our bodies, they work with and optimise our own biological functions.

For instance, if you’re taking CBD oil to help you sleep, it won’t make you sleep; it helps your body do what it naturally wants to do so you can sleep.

We have CBD receptors in our skin too. In every skin cell. This is why applying a CBD product to our skin can cause an amazing range of benefits all over our bodies. Like with sleep, CBD helps our bodies work better so we have better skin.

How CBD Helps Skin

While research is still in its early days, a lot of studies and research suggest that CBD can bring anti-sebum, antioxidant, skin protecting and skin conditioning benefits to your skin.

Because the lipids in CBD oil are very similar to the fats in our bodies, they have an advantage over other moisturisers and skin products because they can sink deep into skin cells and lubricate the surfaces between the cells for unparalleled hydration, soothing, water resistance, and water retention.
