The majority of things we consume have expiration dates and storage instructions. CBD oil is no different!
Why CBD Oil Storage Matters
If stored properly, most CBD products will naturally expire in about 1-2 years. If you use your CBD oil product regularly, it should be gone long before that, so there’s not much to worry about. If you use it sparsely, however, the product will likely be less effective when used after its expiration date.
Proper CBD Oil Storage
CBD is known to break down, mainly when it is exposed to too much heat, air, or light. This means that CBD oil needs to be kept in an airtight, dark container and stored in a cool, dry, dark place. This is why our CBD products come in specifically-made sealed bottles, so you don’t have to worry about additional storage solutions.
Store Bottles Upright: It’s wise to store your CBD oil upright in a pantry, cabinet, office drawer, or somewhere similar so you know they are away from the light and they aren’t likely to leak. Always close the bottle or package completely to keep air and humidity out.
Think About Temp: The average room temperature of around 23 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal temperature to store CBD oil!
Read The Label
There is an infinite and growing variety of CBD oil products on the market. This includes drinks, skin care products, and more. Most guidelines on how to store CBD oil are for oil tinctures. Your individual product may have unique requirements or a different shelf life. So, make sure to learn the needs of your specific product by reading the label.
How to Tell CBD Oil Has Expired
First, check the expiration date. If the date on the package has passed, you shouldn’t use the product.
Appearance: If you can’t find an expiration date, look at the product itself. Does it appear darker or otherwise different than it was when you purchased it? If humidity got inside, you may see fog, cloudiness, or separation.
Smell: Smell it. If it smells different to you or has an unpleasant odour, it has probably expired. Some of the breakdown products of CBD, when it is losing its effectiveness, are quite bitter.
Effectiveness: If you used the product and noticed it didn’t affect you like it usually does, the product might have expired.
